British people often celebrate important events by going out for a meal. Watch the video, which shows a group of friends having a meal together at a restaurant, and practise your speaking skills as you complete the activities.

Tasks

Task 1 - check you know these words

Task 2 - comprehension

Task 3 - conversations at a restaurant

Task 4 - your turn to speak

Practise saying this conversation with a friend:

Waitress: Are you ready to place your order?

Customer: Yes. We're really hungry, so we'll have a starter and a main please.

Waitress: Ok, what can I get for your starters?

Customer: We'll share some garlic bread, please.

Waitress: And what would you like for your mains?

Customer: I'd like a margherita pizza, please, and the others are going to have spaghetti bolognaise.

Waitress: Fantastic. Excellent choices.

You can use your phone to record yourself speaking. Listen and record it again until you are happy.

Last Friday, I went out for dinner with Claire and Helen. Helen’s got a new job so we went out to celebrate. Claire booked a table for 7.30pm at her favourite Italian restaurant in town. When we arrived, the waiter showed us to our table, gave us some menus and took our drinks order. We were really hungry so we decided to have a starter and a main. We placed our order and chatted for a while. Our garlic bread soon arrived. We were hungry, so it disappeared very quickly! Next, the waiter brought our mains. He said, “Buon Appetito”, which is Italian for ‘Enjoy your meal!’. Claire and Helen chose pasta and I had pizza. The food was delicious, but I couldn’t manage a dessert! Claire and Helen had some ice cream, but I just had a coffee. I can’t wait to go again!

Hi,

I've been living in London for 2 years.  I've had a meal in restaurant a lot of times , however, I can't order my food confidently .Still I am constantly thinking of my words before the  waiter gets  the table. It makes me so shy and withdrawn. Therefore I sometimes prefer to choose restaurants which is from my country.

Yes, I had the opportunuty to try different restaurants and type of food in the UK    My partner and I are usually going out for dinner to try new flavours and drinks.

We love food, and the recent experience I had, was in an Italian restaurant in Inverness. The place is small and victorian decorated style with little tables and italian music.

The food is mainly some sort of small dishes like Spanish tapas and you can choose from vegetarian, seafood and meet dishes.

For drinks the choices are limited to prosseco or a variaty of wines, but of course you can get water too.

The restaurant is fantastic, the service is original and the food taste wonderful.

I've been leaving in Herefordshire for 4 years. I did visit a few restaurants there including an Italian restaurant. I love Italian food very much, but I prefer to go to an Indian restaurant because the food is so special for me. My English friends do like a lot Spanish tapas! I think it's very popular in England, but I prefer to go for a proper steak somewhere. In future I hope I'll try some food which I'have never tried before. I always try to prepare in my head what I'll say to the waiter, because I don't have many practise.

I'm taking an english class at school and we were required to check the website and do some exercises. I think it's nice and has some good material that people whom are learning english can work with.

Hi everyone!
I watched the video 5 times and after that I tried to do the tasks.
They were so easy but... Since I learn american English I have some problems with the pronunciation.
After I read the transcript, I could recognize the correct words.
Thanks.
