Voluntary Work - Working in a Charity Shop (unit 1)

Do you work in a charity shop or would you like to find out more about this work? Voluntary work is a good way to practise your English and get work experience in the UK. You will also meet English people and do something important at the same time. Perhaps you would like to visit a charity shop as a customer? Charity shops are friendly and cheap. In this series, you will be able to hear real ESOL learners talking about how they work as volunteers and what they do. This is the first unit in the series of 'Working in a Charity Shop'. Start to learn about the voluntary work that Shashwati and Eszter do and learn some important words.

Do you work in a charity shop?
Do you know anyone who works in a charity shop?
What charity shops are there in your area?
What kind of things do they sell in charity shops?
Do you ever buy things from a charity shop?
Do you ever donate things to a charity shop?

If you already work in a charity shop, can you answer these questions?

What do you talk to customers about?
What do you talk to colleagues about?

In unit 2 you are going to listen to two people, Shashwati and Eszter, talking about their work in a charity shop. As preparation, complete the quiz below.
