ESOL learners at college

Around our college

The lesson is based on the principles of the Language Experience Approach (LEA). It is appropriate for ESOL students with low literacy needs. This approach often takes place with individual students, but this lesson shows how the approach is easily adapted for use with a group.

Rules_for_dating_a_romantic_hero

Rules for dating a romantic hero

This lesson is based on a book from the Quick Reads series, called ‘Rules for dating a romantic hero’ by Harriet Evans. Learners are given the opportunity to use online and classroom-based activities to develop their reading skills.

Reading medicine labels

This lesson is about reading and understanding medicine labels. It should follow on from previous lessons on the topic of health e.g. looking at symptoms and going to the doctors. It provides learners with essential vocabulary to how to take medicines and also gives reading practice.

Favourite British foods

This lesson is about food. It is based on a video, which shows students talking about their favourite British foods. The lesson provides students with the opportunity to listen and learn about British foods and to write about and discuss their food tastes in general.

Six Book Challenge

This lesson shows learners how to take part in the Six Book Challenge run by The Reading Agency, a charity whose mission is to give everyone an equal chance in life by helping people become confident and enthusiastic readers.

Writing on social networks

This lesson, about writing messages to friends on social networks, develops students’ ability to write personal messages and features example threads with comments, which students have the opportunity to contribute to. They can also post new messages, and comment on the postings written by other students.

Learning about Wales

What do your students know about Wales? Try this lesson and help them learn more about an interesting part of the UK.

Getting to know you

Even simple social tasks like inviting a person out to a restaurant can cause embarrassment and stress. This lesson includes discussions of why such situations are difficult, as well as plenty of practice.

Learning to listen

Perhaps the most important skill connected with socialising is to ‘shut up and listen'. This lesson can help students to become active listeners.
