Parents' evening

This lesson is about school parents’ evenings. It provides students with the chance to read about parents’ evenings and practise vocabulary associated with meeting a child’s teacher. It also develops the students’ ability to ask a range of important questions at parents’ evening.

The teacher’s visit

This resource, 'Someone at the door: The teacher’s visit', is part of 'English in my home', which aims to give ESOL learners the confidence and the language to deal with situations they may encounter in their homes.  In this lesson, Sunita meets her son's new teacher, but where is Arjun?

Reading a text message

This lesson develops learners’ reading skills of two different types of text: a text message and a diary page. Ravinder receives a text message about starting an English course and learners read his text and his diary in order to decide which course he is able to attend.

Filling in school forms

This lesson develops learners’ ability to understand and fill in forms, in the context of a school data collection form. Learners read about a mother and her child and use this information to practise answering the type of questions that are typical of school forms.

Reading texts from school

This lesson develops learners’ ability to read and understand typical text messages that parents receive from school. Learners will identify the main idea in the messages and then read them to obtain specific information.

Schooldays

This lesson focuses on the use of the past tense of the verb 'to be' with common adjectives and prepositions in the context of subjects at school. Students will practise using the language in speaking and writing tasks.

Helping your child with maths

This lesson is about ways to support a child develop their numeracy skills and is aimed at learners who are parents or who care for children. It provides learners with information about how numeracy is taught in schools today and gives practice at identifying and using some language common to a maths classroom.
