ESOL learners at college

Around our college

The lesson is based on the principles of the Language Experience Approach (LEA). It is appropriate for ESOL students with low literacy needs. This approach often takes place with individual students, but this lesson shows how the approach is easily adapted for use with a group.

Reading medicine labels

This lesson is about reading and understanding medicine labels. It should follow on from previous lessons on the topic of health e.g. looking at symptoms and going to the doctors. It provides learners with essential vocabulary to how to take medicines and also gives reading practice.

My favourite season

This lesson focuses on spelling and pronunciation of months and seasons in the context of favourite seasons. Students will practise using the language in speaking and writing tasks.

friends at school

Things my child needs for school

Parents of primary school children need to gather together a lot of different clothing and equipment to get their children ready for school. This lesson will help students recognise, write and pronounce all the key words that they'll need to know.

Reading personal information

This lesson plan is for beginner readers. The main aim is to develop the students' ability to read and understand a short text based some on information about a girl called Sharon. Students practise recognising, spelling and pronouncing individual words and then move on to processing short sentences.

At the department store (2)

This lesson develops the skills needed for shopping in a department store. It expands the students’ vocabulary of items that can be bought in a department store and enables them to practise a simple conversation about how to ask where things are.

When did you last.....?

A simple speaking activity for low level learners to practise using the past simple.

Mingling: true or false?

A mingle activity for lower-level students to practise question forms.

Prepositions on the high street

Do your students need to practise using simple prepositions to describe where places are on a typical high street? In this lesson, your students will listen to some information about where places are and fill in a map. They'll also practise asking and answering questions using prepositions and consolidate the language by taking part in a role-play.

Describe a picture

In this lesson, students use their drawing and speaking skills to practise the present continuous form. Drawing adds fun to the activity and may allow less confident students to excel, especially if they are talented artists. An optional writing activity at the end helps consolidate learning.
