Parents' evening

This lesson is about school parents’ evenings. It provides students with the chance to read about parents’ evenings and practise vocabulary associated with meeting a child’s teacher. It also develops the students’ ability to ask a range of important questions at parents’ evening.

greeting someone by shaking hands

Making a good first impression

This lesson is based around employability and deals with different factors which contribute to creating a good first impression, such as dress, punctuality and register of speech.  The language focus is the use of should and shouldn’t to give advice, and learners practise giving advice on how to create a good first impression.

Getting to know you

Even simple social tasks like inviting a person out to a restaurant can cause embarrassment and stress. This lesson includes discussions of why such situations are difficult, as well as plenty of practice.

Online chatting

This activity simulates online written chat, a popular communication process which has features common to both speaking and writing.

Discussion wheels

Discussion wheels are a good way of giving students time to think and formulate opinions before they do discussion work. They work particularly well with areas of discussion which can have ranges of agreement or disagreement.
Reading news

News

In this lesson, students will develop their vocabulary to talk about the news. They will also be given the opportunity to discuss the news with their classmates and retell a newsworthy story that is important to them.

The teacher’s visit

This resource, 'Someone at the door: The teacher’s visit', is part of 'English in my home', which aims to give ESOL learners the confidence and the language to deal with situations they may encounter in their homes.  In this lesson, Sunita meets her son's new teacher, but where is Arjun?
