Same as the teacher?

This fun activity can be used as a vocabulary review or to test existing vocabulary knowledge, and generates a lot of lexis.

Healthy eating

In this lesson, students will read and talk about balanced diets and learn how to interpret the nutritional information tables on food packaging. As a result, students will be more able to make healthier food choices when food shopping.

Describing your skills at interview

This lesson is based around employability and deals with the personal skills and qualities expected by employers.  It provides learners with practice describing their skills and qualities in job interviews.

a nurse speaking to a patient

Using a person specification

This lesson helps learners to be able to use a person specification when applying for work. They will develop their understanding of the vocabulary used to describe personal skills and attributes in an employability context.

Controversial statements

This free-speaking activity is a great way to start a lesson. ‘ARM exercises’ is simply short for Accept, Reject or Modify statements.

Making it up: phrasal verb stories

A persistent problem area for students is phrasal verbs. This story activity presents the verbs in a context helping the students to work out the meaning. It is also memorable so it's easier for students to remember them too.

A dark and stormy night

The activity should work at most levels above elementary, as long as your students have some knowledge of past tenses, but it works best when they also know past continuous / progressive too. All you need to get things started is a sheet of plain paper for each pair of students.

Questioning and clarifying

In a negotiation, it’s very important to know when to speak, when to ask and when to listen. Here students rank and discuss the stages of negotiation, do a reading activity and look at negotiations vocabulary, examine question types, then finish with a role play to practise clarifying, summarising and responding.
