ESOL learners at college

Around our college

The lesson is based on the principles of the Language Experience Approach (LEA). It is appropriate for ESOL students with low literacy needs. This approach often takes place with individual students, but this lesson shows how the approach is easily adapted for use with a group.

Reading medicine labels

This lesson is about reading and understanding medicine labels. It should follow on from previous lessons on the topic of health e.g. looking at symptoms and going to the doctors. It provides learners with essential vocabulary to how to take medicines and also gives reading practice.

Reading job adverts

This lesson develops learners’ reading skills and enables learners to understand important information contained in job adverts.  They are presented with three simple job adverts; waiter, cleaner and delivery driver.

Reading a letter from hospital

This lesson develops learners’ ability to read and understand a letter about going into hospital for an operation. They will learn important new vocabulary related to hospitals, then use a range of reading strategies to elicit the main points and then specific information from the letter.

Reading a text message

This lesson develops learners’ reading skills of two different types of text: a text message and a diary page. Ravinder receives a text message about starting an English course and learners read his text and his diary in order to decide which course he is able to attend.

Going to work

Going to work aims to provide beginner ESOL learners with some basic vocabulary and skills to access work along with opportunity to practise the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Weddings in the UK

This lesson is about weddings in the UK and in other countries the learners know. This lesson is aimed beginner ESOL learners who can read and write at a basic level. Learners will learn useful vocabulary so they can discuss weddings and they will have the opportunity to read a text aloud and complete some comprehension tasks.
