Housing in the UK

This lesson is about housing in the UK and is based on Housing materials from both the NIACE Citizenship materials for ESOL and the ESOL Nexus learner website. The lesson provides an overview of the types of accommodation available in the UK and develops the learner's ability to ask and answer questions, listen for detail and fill in a housing form.

Stop, go back dictation

A dictation activity where learners control the teacher's dictation.

a man watching TV

Review writing activity: sitcoms

Students read reviews of popular sitcoms, then watch a clip of a sitcom and create their own reviews.

Police emergency

This resource is taken from the Be safe UK series of resources which aims to give learners the confidence needed to be able to call for help in the event of an emergency.

Writing on social networks

This lesson, about writing messages to friends on social networks, develops students’ ability to write personal messages and features example threads with comments, which students have the opportunity to contribute to. They can also post new messages, and comment on the postings written by other students.

Big numbers

Lots of our students have problems with big numbers. Sometimes they don’t know where to say ‘and’. Sometimes they confuse numbers like ‘sixteen’ and ‘sixty’. In this lesson students revise big numbers in a fun way. First they play a guessing game, then they play Bingo! They finish with a pair work jigsaw reading activity.

From questions to story writing

When students write a story, they often concentrate too much on the plot at the expense of grammar. This activity helps students with both.

Word association and story writing

This idea can help students with their writing of stories. It gives all them some essential, and some superfluous, vocabulary.

A dark and stormy night

The activity should work at most levels above elementary, as long as your students have some knowledge of past tenses, but it works best when they also know past continuous / progressive too. All you need to get things started is a sheet of plain paper for each pair of students.

Ebooks

Are you for or against electronic books? In this lesson, students read about the advantages and disadvantages of electronic books. They look at language for essay writing and the informal language of blog comments.
