Housing in the UK

This lesson is about housing in the UK and is based on Housing materials from both the NIACE Citizenship materials for ESOL and the ESOL Nexus learner website. The lesson provides an overview of the types of accommodation available in the UK and develops the learner's ability to ask and answer questions, listen for detail and fill in a housing form.

In this lesson you are going to listen to Penny talking about the town she lives in. The focus of the lesson is articles.

What is the UK?

Which countries make up the UK?  What are their national customs?  Watch this film to find out and learn some useful new words too.

What's happening in the town?

Unit 3 is about what happens at places in town. It develops all language skills and can be used in ESOL literacy classes. Learners listen to sound clips and discuss what they can hear and where, build sentences and identify verb-noun collocations. Learners also develop simple transactional dialogues such as buying food in a café, a ticket on the bus, or paying at the checkout.

In the UK, Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes is celebrated on November 5th and the night skies are filled with colour. It's a special day in honour of a historic event. In this activity you can read about the history of the November 5th celebrations, complete various tasks to check your understanding and try an exercise on passives.
