Reading job adverts

This lesson develops learners’ reading skills and enables learners to understand important information contained in job adverts.  They are presented with three simple job adverts; waiter, cleaner and delivery driver.  

Reading a letter from hospital

This lesson develops learners’ ability to read and understand a letter about going into hospital for an operation. They will learn important new vocabulary related to hospitals, then use a range of reading strategies to elicit the main points and then specific information from the letter. 

Talking about feelings

This lesson introduces learners to vocabulary and structures used for describing feelings. As well as developing learners’ ability to read the words, learners will be able to practise pronouncing them and writing simple sentences using adjectives and the verb ‘to be.’

Reading a text message

This lesson develops learners’ reading skills of two different types of text: a text message and a diary page. Ravinder receives a text message about starting an English course and learners read his text and his diary in order to decide which course he is able to attend.

Food

This lesson develops learners’ vocabulary of food items and focuses on words beginning with ‘b’ and ‘p’. Learners have many opportunities to learn the vocabulary, practise their pronunciation and spell the words.

Filling in school forms

This lesson develops learners’ ability to understand and fill in forms, in the context of a school data collection form. Learners read about a mother and her child and use this information to practise answering the type of questions that are typical of school forms.

Reading texts from school

This lesson develops learners’ ability to read and understand typical text messages that parents receive from school. Learners will identify the main idea in the messages and then read them to obtain specific information.

Study skills for beginner level ESOL learners

Study skills aims to give beginner ESOL learners an introduction to study skills and language learning techniques, particularly time management, learning vocabulary and practising spelling.  The activities are ideal for the beginning of a learning programme and the low level of some of the activities reflects this.
