Same as the teacher?

This fun activity can be used as a vocabulary review or to test existing vocabulary knowledge, and generates a lot of lexis.

ESOL learner writing

From questions to story writing

When students write a story, they often concentrate too much on the plot at the expense of grammar. This activity helps students with both.

Jigsaw reading activity

This reading and speaking activity provides practice in giving clear instructions and explaining the rules of a game. Students can then play the games as an extension activity.

Word association and story writing

This idea can help students with their writing of stories. It gives all them some essential, and some superfluous, vocabulary.

Controversial statements

This free-speaking activity is a great way to start a lesson. ‘ARM exercises’ is simply short for Accept, Reject or Modify statements.

Making it up: phrasal verb stories

A persistent problem area for students is phrasal verbs. This story activity presents the verbs in a context helping the students to work out the meaning. It is also memorable so it's easier for students to remember them too.

Vision off - YouTube technique

This YouTube activity really gets your students thinking creatively. A short film is played for the students, but they can’t see the scene, they can only hear it.

The Titanic and the third conditional

This is a way to consolidate the form of the third conditional. it is best used at the end of the first lesson in which students meet the form, or at the latest the one after.

From picture to story

This activity mainly provides writing practice but also practises question forms and encourages creativity. It is a student-centred activity which encourages collaboration and teamwork.

Doctors and patients - speaking practice

Students practise speaking by roleplaying doctors and patients. Learn more
