Magic mirror storytelling

This lesson uses a simple storytelling technique (magic mirror) to give students speaking practice in a relaxed, non-threatening environment. Magic mirror can be used at any level, but works best where students have a sufficient level of English to narrate a story orally. 

Car insurance

This lesson plan is about raising the students’ awareness of the need for car insurance when driving in the UK. As they learn about the legal requirements regarding car insurance and the difference types available, they will develop their vocabulary and speaking skills. The lesson ends with the students role-playing a telephone conversation to get a car insurance quote.

Housing in the UK

This lesson is about housing in the UK and is based on Housing materials from both the NIACE Citizenship materials for ESOL and the ESOL Nexus learner website. The lesson provides an overview of the types of accommodation available in the UK and develops the learner's ability to ask and answer questions, listen for detail and fill in a housing form.

The royal family

This lesson gives students the opportunity to find out more about the British royal family and to practise their speaking skills.

Unexpected situations

This lesson plan is all about the language learners need in the outside world when things do not go exactly according to plan!  

Parents' evening

This lesson is about school parents’ evenings. It provides students with the chance to read about parents’ evenings and practise vocabulary associated with meeting a child’s teacher. It also develops the students’ ability to ask a range of important questions at parents’ evening.

Why do we do that?

An activity where students reflect on what they do in the classroom and why, which leads to a discussion about classroom practices.

When did you last.....?

A simple speaking activity for low level learners to practise using the past simple.

To catch a thief: past simple and past continuous practice.

Students write a short article about a robbery to practise the past simple and past continuous.
