Unexpected situations

This lesson plan is all about the language learners need in the outside world when things do not go exactly according to plan!

An emergency

These resources aim to give learners the confidence and the language to deal with situations they may encounter in their homes.  In this lesson, Arjun and Sunita deal with an emergency at home and call for help.

Wrong number

These resources aim to give learners the confidence and the language to deal with situations they may encounter in their homes. In this lesson, Arjun shows Sunita an interesting way to deal with unwanted callers.

Developing your career

This resource is aimed primarily at learners who are already working in retail or who want to find out more about working in the sector, but will appeal to any learners who need to talk about processes, prices or career development. The resource uses authentic sound recordings as a springboard for practice in listening, speaking, writing and numeracy skills within this context.

Learning about Wales

What do your students know about Wales? Try this lesson and help them learn more about an interesting part of the UK.

Getting to know you

Even simple social tasks like inviting a person out to a restaurant can cause embarrassment and stress. This lesson includes discussions of why such situations are difficult, as well as plenty of practice.

Cycling and carbon emissions

Cycling and carbon emissions

Students think about and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of cycling. They then consider what else they could do personally to reduce their carbon emissions.

ESOL learner writing

From questions to story writing

When students write a story, they often concentrate too much on the plot at the expense of grammar. This activity helps students with both.

Controversial statements

This free-speaking activity is a great way to start a lesson. ‘ARM exercises’ is simply short for Accept, Reject or Modify statements.

Making it up: phrasal verb stories

A persistent problem area for students is phrasal verbs. This story activity presents the verbs in a context helping the students to work out the meaning. It is also memorable so it's easier for students to remember them too.
