Stop, go back dictation

A dictation activity where learners control the teacher's dictation.

a man watching TV

Review writing activity: sitcoms

Students read reviews of popular sitcoms, then watch a clip of a sitcom and create their own reviews.

Police emergency

This resource is taken from the Be safe UK series of resources which aims to give learners the confidence needed to be able to call for help in the event of an emergency.

The noisy television

This resource is part of 'English in my home', which aims to give ESOL learners the confidence and the language to deal with situations they may encounter in their homes.  in this lesson, Arjun's neighbour compalins about the television. Learners practise complaining politely and dealing with complaints.

Writing a note

This resource is aimed at learners who are considering becoming self-employed. It also explores the language needed by a self-employed cleaners and taxi-driver so it will also be useful for learners who work in these areas. In this section, learners explore the language of note writing further and write their own note.

Supervising: accident reports

Customer complaints is suitable for learners who are working or plan to work as cleaning supervisors. It give learners practice completing formal accident reports.

Big numbers

Lots of our students have problems with big numbers. Sometimes they don’t know where to say ‘and’. Sometimes they confuse numbers like ‘sixteen’ and ‘sixty’. In this lesson students revise big numbers in a fun way. First they play a guessing game, then they play Bingo! They finish with a pair work jigsaw reading activity.

From questions to story writing

When students write a story, they often concentrate too much on the plot at the expense of grammar. This activity helps students with both.

Word association and story writing

This idea can help students with their writing of stories. It gives all them some essential, and some superfluous, vocabulary.

A dark and stormy night

The activity should work at most levels above elementary, as long as your students have some knowledge of past tenses, but it works best when they also know past continuous / progressive too. All you need to get things started is a sheet of plain paper for each pair of students.
