Places in the town

Unit 1 is about places in an urban area. It develops all language skills and can be used in ESOL literacy classes. Learners use numbers, letters and word recognition to create a simple key or label places on the map.

 

Where's the supermarket?

Unit 2 is about describing the location of places using simple prepositions of place. It develops all language skills and can be used in ESOL literacy classes. Learners listen and follow simple instructions, find locations on a 2d map, and create their own simple sentences.

 

Li's story

Li’s story is a resource for all beginner ESOL learners, including those with basic literacy needs.  Learners will develop narrative ideas, read and follow a story about a mother whose child is taken ill at school.  They will be able to participate in a range of learning activities which develop early language and reading skills.

Tom's story

Tom’s story is a resource for all beginner ESOL learners, including those with basic literacy needs. Learners will develop an everyday story from pictures and develop their listening and speaking skills as they do so.  Opportunities are given for role play and drilling of simple, functional language.

What's happening in the town?

Unit 3 is about what happens at places in town. It develops all language skills and can be used in ESOL literacy classes. Learners listen to sound clips and discuss what they can hear and where, build sentences and identify verb-noun collocations. Learners also develop simple transactional dialogues such as buying food in a café, a ticket on the bus, or paying at the checkout.

This resource is taken from the Be safe UK series of resources which aims to give learners the confidence needed to be able to call for help in the event of an emergency.

Ambulance emergency

This resource aims to give learners the confidence needed to be able to call for help in the event of an emergency.

Fire safety 3: bedtime checks

This resource helps low level learners to learn vocabulary and read a simple text about the fire safety checks you should make before you go to bed.

Fire safety 2: make your home safe

This resource will help learners to understand a simple text about how they can make their home safe.  They will also practise giving simple safety instructions.

The teacher’s phone call

This resource, 'Someone on the phone: the teacher’s phone call',  aims to give ESOL learners the confidence and the language to deal with situations they may encounter in their homes. In this film, Sunita speaks to her son's primary school teacher on the phone.
