Weddings in the UK

This lesson is about weddings in the UK and in other countries the learners know. This lesson is aimed beginner ESOL learners who can read and write at a basic level. Learners will learn useful vocabulary so they can discuss weddings and they will have the opportunity to read a text aloud and complete some comprehension tasks. 

Reading medicine labels

This lesson is about reading and understanding medicine labels. It should follow on from previous lessons on the topic of health e.g. looking at symptoms and going to the doctors. It provides learners with essential vocabulary to how to take medicines and also gives reading practice.

My favourite season

This lesson focuses on spelling and pronunciation of months and seasons in the context of favourite seasons. Students will practise using the language in speaking and writing tasks.

Watching television: adjectives

This lesson focuses on the use of –ed/-ing adjectives in the context of watching television. Students will practise using the adjectives to talk about their viewing habits.

Dictation: relationships

This lesson is about the relationships students have. The tasks allows for discussion and personalisation and can lead to stronger group cohesion as the students learn more about each others’ lives. It provides practice in all four skills.

Around the UK: Giant's causeway

This lesson is about the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. It provides students with opportunities to describe places and combine clauses with conjunctions and relative pronouns. Students develop their writing, reading and listening skills as well as their vocabulary and discussion skills.

Things my child needs for school

Parents of primary school children need to gather together a lot of different clothing and equipment to get their children ready for school. This lesson will help students recognise, write and pronounce all the key words that they'll need to know.

Reading personal information

This lesson plan is for beginner readers. The main aim is to develop the students' ability to read and understand a short text based some on information about a girl called Sharon. Students practise recognising, spelling and pronouncing individual words and then move on to processing short sentences.

Favourite British foods

This lesson is about food. It is based on a video, which shows students talking about their favourite British foods. The lesson provides students with the opportunity to listen and learn about British foods and to write about and discuss their food tastes in general. 

Housing in the UK

This lesson is about housing in the UK and is based on Housing materials from both the NIACE Citizenship materials for ESOL and the ESOL Nexus learner website. The lesson provides an overview of the types of accommodation available in the UK and develops the learner's ability to ask and answer questions, listen for detail and fill in a housing form.
