Housing in the UK

This lesson is about housing in the UK and is based on Housing materials from both the NIACE Citizenship materials for ESOL and the ESOL Nexus learner website. The lesson provides an overview of the types of accommodation available in the UK and develops the learner's ability to ask and answer questions, listen for detail and fill in a housing form.

Bad neighbours

Neighbours are part of life.  We all have experience of neighbours and in most cases this will mean both good and bad.  This lesson will explore a range of different relationships and attitudes that can exist between neighbours in the UK through discussion, vocabulary building and arranging a dinner party seating plan.

Pet mania

This lesson looks at the recent UK trend of having a small dog as a fashion accessory.

Talking about jobs

The aims of this lesson are to provide practice of the vocabulary of jobs and of reading and speaking skills. The lesson is based around a jigsaw reading exercise on a text about a survey of hairdressers. It introduces the topic of jobs with discussion and a dictation, then asks learners to identify and exchange information.

a theatre

Shakespeare

This lesson gives learners the opportunity to look more closely at Hamlet's famous 'to be or not to be' speech.

How new words are created

This lesson looks at how new words are created in English and encourages learners to analyse and experiment with words.

Money conversations

Money conversations

This is a lesson based on money, though students’ own attitudes can be kept private if they so desire. And it can remain so, but as a conversation topic, money is a veritable gold mine!

Raising money for charity

Students will find out about charity shops and explore ways to raise money for charity. A central focus of this lesson is the valuable work of The Ruth Hayman Trust.

Phrasal verbs with get

Phrasal verbs with get

This lesson is a self-contained lesson which presents ten phrasal verbs in the context of a dialogue. Students focus on the meaning of those phrasal verbs through a vocabulary and meaning matching exercise.

Politics and youth

This lesson gives students the opportunity to find out about the political system in the UK and to discuss the attitude of many young people towards politics.
