Internet safety

This lesson provides students with the opportunity to learn about internet safety. Students will develop their close listening skills by watching and listening to a video and completing a dictation. The lesson will provide plenty of opportunities for discussion and will finish with the students creating a poster to advise children how to stay safe on the internet.

Know your consumer rights

This lesson provides students with facts about their consumer rights, to make them better informed when they are buying items in shops or online. As well as learning common collocations related to consumer rights, they will practise their listening skills and take part in a role-play to return a faulty item.

Describe a picture

In this lesson, students use their drawing and speaking skills to practise the present continuous form. Drawing adds fun to the activity and may allow less confident students to excel, especially if they are talented artists. An optional writing activity at the end helps consolidate learning.

Presenting a personal history

This lesson focuses on the past simple, past continuous and past perfect tenses in the context of biographies and culminates in students giving a short presentation about a famous person.

Presenting a storyboard

In this lesson, students will practise writing persuasive text for adverts using present and past continuous forms. The concept of a storyboard is introduced, an example is examined in detail and students produce their own storyboard to advertise a product.

How your MP can help you

This lesson enables students to identify national and local MPs, explore the role of MPs in the UK’s political system, find out how to contact a local MP and practise contacting them. The lesson uses materials from the NIACE ‘Citizenship for ESOL Learners’ pack.

Fairtrade

This lesson is about the Fairtrade Foundation and offers opportunities to differentiate learning through the use of online web tools. Your students will develop their vocabulary to discuss Fairtrade and will be given reading and speaking practice to consolidate their skills.

Dogme in ESOL

This is a speaking and listening practice lesson about any topic you can think of. It provides students with the opportunity to tell you what they know about a topic and lets them work with this language through a variety of tasks (storytelling, debating and dictogloss activities).

Question forms

This lesson is about the people in the room and can be use with a variety of levels. Students are given the opportunity to talk about themselves as they develop their ability to ask and answer questions. The focus is on accurate question formation through discussion, peer-correction and student interviews.

A birthday party

This lesson is based on a video about a child attending a birthday party in the UK.
