ESOL learners at college

Around our college

The lesson is based on the principles of the Language Experience Approach (LEA). It is appropriate for ESOL students with low literacy needs. This approach often takes place with individual students, but this lesson shows how the approach is easily adapted for use with a group.

Housing in the UK

This lesson is about housing in the UK and is based on Housing materials from both the NIACE Citizenship materials for ESOL and the ESOL Nexus learner website. The lesson provides an overview of the types of accommodation available in the UK and develops the learner's ability to ask and answer questions, listen for detail and fill in a housing form.

Healthy eating

In this lesson, students will read and talk about balanced diets and learn how to interpret the nutritional information tables on food packaging. As a result, students will be more able to make healthier food choices when food shopping.

Job roles and responsibilities

This lesson is about identifying different job titles and their associated duties. It provides learners with practice at using full sentences to talk about a job.

Describing your skills at interview

This lesson is based around employability and deals with the personal skills and qualities expected by employers.  It provides learners with practice describing their skills and qualities in job interviews.

My journey to work

This lesson is about Anne’s journey to work. It provides learners with listening and speaking practice of transport vocabulary and talking about their journeys to work or college/school.

Using a person specification

This lesson helps learners to be able to use a person specification when applying for work. They will develop their understanding of the vocabulary used to describe personal skills and attributes in an employability context.

Learning about Wales

What do your students know about Wales? Try this lesson and help them learn more about an interesting part of the UK.

Learning to listen

Perhaps the most important skill connected with socialising is to ‘shut up and listen'. This lesson can help students to become active listeners.

Yesterday

In this lesson students practise forming, asking and answering ‘wh’ questions in the past tense. They play two games and do a mingling activity.
