Magic mirror storytelling

This lesson uses a simple storytelling technique (magic mirror) to give students speaking practice in a relaxed, non-threatening environment. Magic mirror can be used at any level, but works best where students have a sufficient level of English to narrate a story orally.

Bad neighbours

Neighbours are part of life.  We all have experience of neighbours and in most cases this will mean both good and bad.  This lesson will explore a range of different relationships and attitudes that can exist between neighbours in the UK through discussion, vocabulary building and arranging a dinner party seating plan.

Modern technology

This lesson is about modern technology and the effect it has had on people’s lives in recent years. A reading text provides the main focus of the lesson and the skill of speed-reading is developed. Students are encouraged to identify the meaning of vocabulary within the context and to focus on the pronunciation of regular past simple verbs.

Police emergency

This resource is taken from the Be safe UK series of resources which aims to give learners the confidence needed to be able to call for help in the event of an emergency.

Cycling and carbon emissions

Cycling and carbon emissions

Students think about and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of cycling. They then consider what else they could do personally to reduce their carbon emissions.

Big numbers

Lots of our students have problems with big numbers. Sometimes they don’t know where to say ‘and’. Sometimes they confuse numbers like ‘sixteen’ and ‘sixty’. In this lesson students revise big numbers in a fun way. First they play a guessing game, then they play Bingo! They finish with a pair work jigsaw reading activity.

Making it up: phrasal verb stories

A persistent problem area for students is phrasal verbs. This story activity presents the verbs in a context helping the students to work out the meaning. It is also memorable so it's easier for students to remember them too.

Discussion wheels

Discussion wheels are a good way of giving students time to think and formulate opinions before they do discussion work. They work particularly well with areas of discussion which can have ranges of agreement or disagreement.

Questioning and clarifying

In a negotiation, it’s very important to know when to speak, when to ask and when to listen. Here students rank and discuss the stages of negotiation, do a reading activity and look at negotiations vocabulary, examine question types, then finish with a role play to practise clarifying, summarising and responding.

Supervising: evaluating performance

Evaluating feedback is suitable for learners who are working or plan to work as cleaning supervisors. It helps learners structure feedback when giving appraisals as well as allowing them to practise appropriate vocabulary.
